The handle, the hinge and the lamps.

Many buildings, in Helsinki, have been designed by Alvar Aalto.

Where I work, in Kamppi (Helsinki city center), there is this a building called sähkötalo (electricity house, as it serves as headquarter of an electricity company).

The building was designed by Alvar Aalto and built between 1970 and 1973.

I love details of this building.

The bronze handles:

The corners:

And the lamps:

The other day, I found those saloon brass hinges in a flea market. I can’t stop thinking they have a little “je ne sais quoi” that puts them right in that building.

don’t they?

In the meantime, feel special next time you pull those heavy door, your hand holding one bronze Aalto handle at Stockmann, the main train station, the academic book store…etc. and of course, at sähkötalo.
